Vance
in Ft. Worth Tames Runway Cracks
Vance
Brothers-Fort Worth recently worked on an installation
project that also involved a crackseal and overlay at
the Gregg County Airport in Longview, Texas. Vance Brothers
was a subcontractor to Kanza Construction of Topeka,
Kan.
The problem
at the Gregg County Airport was that the asphalt on
the airport taxiways was badly cracked and alligatored.
Specifications called for filling the larger cracks
with VB 3405 rubberized crack sealant supplied by Vance
Brothers and applied by Kanza Construction. This product
is a single-component, hot-applied crack sealant that
can be applied immediately after application temperature
is reached. VB 3405 is composed of a select grade asphalt,
with virgin and synthetic rubbers along with other modifiers.
It is specially formulated for parking lots and is also
suitable for roads and highways.
After
sealing, Vance Brothers crews primed all the filled
cracks with a thin layer of Vance Brothers P-Primer-2,
a unique adhesive applied prior to Petrotac placement.
Petrotac, manufactured by BP Amoco, is a unique peel
and stick paving fabric/rubberized asphalt composite
membrane that acts as a moisture barrier as well as
a stress absorbing membrane interlayer. It is used in
pavement maintenance to treat joints and cracks before
overlay placement. Petrotac can also be used as a bridge
deck membrane system.
Before
the crew was able to install the Petrotac, they experienced
the first of several delays due to rain. Fortunately,
by first using the P-Primer-2, the crew did not have
to wait long for the primed surface to dry. The protection
of the P-Primer-2 allowed the Petrotac installation
to resume quickly after the rains. The project was finished
in five days, despite losing two days to the weather.
Representatives
from Kanza were very complimentary of this job and of
past projects when they worked with Vance Brothers.
Ultimately, they were very pleased with the results
at the Gregg County airport project. Steve Penner from
KSA Engineers, Quality Control Engineers, stated that
although he had not previously worked with Petrotac,
he was happy with the product and the finished installation. |
